Notre Dame High School is unequivocally a Roman Catholic school. Our church recognises the responsibility of parents as the first and foremost educators of their children. Teachers at Notre Dame work in partnership with parents to help young people grow in faith ; Also to enable this faith to develop into a mature and personal response to Christ - to convince them of the value and truth of Christian living.
Through the work of our Chaplain Father Joe Keenan our Principal Teacher of R.E. Mrs McArthur and our staff we aim to meet our responsibility to the religious and spiritual aims of the school in a number of ways :
OUR SCHOOL ETHOS
This is established by the Head teacher and Staff who make great efforts to maintain a Christian education and atmosphere in our school.
OUR RE PROGRAMME
Every class in the school follows a programme of religious education laid down by Glasgow Archdiocese. Every RE class receives instruction from a Catholic teacher. Each class receives two periods per week devoted to Religious Education.
OUR PASTORAL GROUP
This is a group of volunteer teachers who meet regularly. They assist in the school’s RE programme by providing suitable classroom materials and help arrange Liturgical Celebrations. They also make recommendations to the Head teacher as a result of liaison with RE teachers.
OUR SACRAMENTAL AND LITURGICAL LIFE
Involving local clergy this is an essential part of our Christian community. Daily Mass and prayers, class Masses, year Masses, Sacrament of Penance, carol services, spiritual retreats, seminars and other such activities.
Although this is a Catholic school, we welcome each year a number of girls who have different faiths. The developing spirituality of each of our children enhances the close community and therefore all pupils contribute to the spiritual life of the group. If, however, parents do not wish their daughter to be involved in this aspect of school life, they should contact the Head Teacher.
Parents from ethnic minority religious communities may request that their children be permitted to be absent from school in order to celebrate recognised religious events. Only written requests detailing the proposed arrangements will be considered. Appropriate requests will be granted on not more than three occasions in any one school session and the pupil noted as an authorised absentee in the register
