Support for Learning

A number of young people have additional support needs and require support with their learning.

The school aims to promote equal opportunities and social justice by seeking to ensure that all pupils are provided with an education which allows them to develop their potential. A feature of our provision is our Support for Learning Team. In Notre Dame this team consists of Learning Support teachers (LS) and teachers of English as an Additional Language (EAL).

Learning Support

The Learning Support teachers work in a variety of ways in order to help to meet the needs of all pupils.

  • When a pupil has problems in language and number, by offering tutorial support, and/or a programme of work for home.
  • Working co-operatively as a support teacher in subjects like English, Maths, Science, History, Geography etc. In this way there are two teachers in the classroom and pupils can get more teacher attention.
  • Consulting with teachers and Parents/Carers on how to improve the learning of pupils. Working closely with primary schools, Pastoral Care teachers, the educational psychologist and any agency that may have something to contribute to the needs of pupils.
  • Assisting with staff development so that teachers are in a better position to provide the best education for pupils.
